To The North

From Auckland City centre we headed North to Orewa, we stopped by at the Pillows Backpackers to visit Mike the owner, sound bloke. We told him about our van problems when we stayed there back in Janaury. He was pleased to see us…and our van! We told him we were heading up to the Northland so he gave us some useful leaflets and even gave us 2 vouchers for the hot pools near by which gave us $15 each off entry! $10 instead of $25 – bargain central.

The next day we took the Legendary Highway 1 through Pohuehue, then Warkworth, bypassed the east corner and through Wellsford and headed for Mangawhai on the east coast. We got to Mangawhai Heads by late afternoon, it was a lovely summers day and the beach looked beautiful, it was a nice white sand beach, unlike the south of the island where the Volcanoes nearby produce the black sands. The beach almost resembled Newquay beaches; small waves, sand dunes, warm weather and wind!
